~~National Go For A Ride Day~~

~~National Go For A Ride Day~~

What is Go For a Ride Day?

Go For a Ride Day urges you to just get up and get out! Do you ever feel like you’re tied to your laptop/phone/tablet screens? It's a day for escape, for wandering, and for taking in the scenery. Celebrating all forms of transportation—cars, trucks, planes, trains, scooters, bikes, and everything in between—it's a day to go for a ride! Pick a location you’ve always wanted to visit and make today the day you’ll go. Today the focus is on the journey, not the destination.

History of Go For a Ride Day

Birthdays are fun and Christmas means presents but nothing quite compares with the day you get your license. That’s when your world truly changes forever. Why? Cars mean freedom. You can suddenly go anywhere at anytime (as long as your parents are cool with your plans). Such is the nature of transportation — something we in the 21st century take for granted. We all grew up with planes, trains and automobiles — so we’re quite used to getting where we need to go.

Just a little weird fact for you all. Today is also the anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy, who was shot while riding in an open-top car. Nonetheless, it is unknown who created Go For a Ride Day, and we shouldn't let one abhorrent event in history keep us from celebrating the joy of going for a ride.

How to Celebrate?
Gather your friends and family members and take a ride out of the city to the countryside. Pack a picnic lunch along and commune with nature.
Participate in a bike or car rally or race.
Take a ride in your car to the nearest amusement park and spend the day enjoying some amusement rides.
Don't own a vehicle? Don't worry, take a ride in your local public transport.

So what are you waiting for??? Get dressed, grab them keys, and drive. It doesnt matter where you end up, just as long as you enjoyed the journey of getting there! Drive safe and responsibly!!!

Until next time, take care of yourself and each other!

Check Your Blood Pressure Day

Roll those sleeves up and get that Blood Pressure cuff ready!

With the holidays coming up on us it is more likely for people to have higher blood pressure than normal due to the stress of season. During this season we stress so much over who is going to cook to what does everyone want for Christmas. With all this going on your blood pressure can sky rocket and you wouldn't know it. So today it is urged for you to check your blood pressure and if you check out in normal range then you will be all set to go for the upcoming holidays. Now if your blood pressure is a tad bit high just know it might get higher with the holiday stress. Your blood pressure is not just some numbers over a line, they are indicators of your health and well-being.

What exactly is Blood Pressure?

Blood Pressure is defined as: the pressure of the blood in the circulatory system, often measured for diagnoses since it is closely related to the force and rate of the heartbeat and the diameter and elasticity of the arterial walls. In so many words your blood pressures the force of blood pushing through your body. Now if  that force is too high it can put a lot of strain on the arteries and cause some damage to your body. If it stays high overtime it can lead to strokes, heart attacks and other conditions.

How is it measured?

Your blood pressure is recorded using two numbers, which are:

*Systolic blood pressure - indicates how much pressure your blood exerting againist your artery walls when the heart bears.
*Diastolic blood pressure - indicated how much pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls while the heart is resting between beats.

If your blood pressure ever gets over 180 your are considered a walking stroke/heart attack. In this case you will need to seek out some medical attention to see why your pressure is high and maybe even visit the ER to get check out immediately. Sometimes if your blood pressure is too high a doctor may prescribe some medication to get it under control or you may need to change your diet to decrease that number. I have had issues with my blood pressure in rl due to my pregnancies to the point I had to get my own blood pressure machine:

Since I was able to check on my blood pressure everyday it allowed me to adjust my lifestyle and control my stress levels so my pressure wasn't so high like it was starting to become.

In conclusion on this days please check on your blood pressure so you can know here you stand before this stressful holiday season starts and you can adjust your lifestyle to get your pressure under control. But besides the holidays check your blood pressure throughout the year as well just to stay up to date with your current health. Until next next time you all be blessed.

As with other Cancers, lung cancer is heartbreaking, deadly and attacks like a army. Before telling useful information and facts about lung cancer, I would like to share my story...

My mother smoked cigarettes for many, many years and all attempts to stop smoking just wasn't successful. In 1997 I remember it so very clearly, I was at work and my mother was at the doctor getting results from test that I had no idea she had taken. While it wasn't the best idea for my middle sister to contact me at work, she did and the words that escaped her mouth, I would never forget the feeling I got in the pit of my stomach.... Through tears she said... "Mommy has cancer." The phone dropped without me even realizing it and my heart sank and all I heard her say wasn't those words, but to me it conveyed into, "Mommy is dying." I started crying so hard that my supervisor had to take me to her office and let me get it out there. That day began the journey of my mother's cancer fight and has scared as I was, I was determined to help her get through this fight.

We watched as she endured lung surgery to remove half of her lung, chemotherapy that made her extremely sick and took all of her hair, radiation which made it hard for her to breathe and made her chest area hard and discolored. This was not easy to watch but my mother.... My mother is my hero because through it all, she prayed, she smiled, she kept a constant smiled and glow to her. You would never believe this woman was enduring so much.

Four years later, they said the cancer had gone however, due to all of this trauma, she had heart trouble, diabetes, thyroid surgery, asthma but the cancer itself had become what I say dormant but what the doctors said... gone....

A year later, I would never forget, two days after our birthday (we share the same birthday), in November it was 70 degrees out, we had celebrated our birthday by going to times square and having a ball. Two days later she ended up in the hospital, blood sugar spiked, they admitted her and two days after that she was in ICU with the doctors telling us she would not make it, her lungs had filled with blood and the cancer they said was gone had woken up with a vengeance! But my mother wasn't done. God knew the family wasn't ready to lose her. After two days of not waking up, she awaken, bright eyed, smiles and said it was time to come back.

We had my mother for two months after that and as I write this it's ironic everything was happening in twos. On January 31, 2002, my mother lost that fight to Lung Cancer, and while God gained a angel the world lost a amazing soul....

I told my story to wake people up especially smokers.

Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer.
Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, and the leading cause in people who have never smoked. For more information about radon and testing your home, please visit EPA.gov/radon.
Other risk factors include:
  - lung scarring from tuberculosis
  - occupational or environmental exposure to:
     • secondhand smoke
     • radiation
     • asbestos
     • air pollution
     • arsenic
     • some organic chemicals
Genetic predisposition may also play a role in lung cancer development.
People who have never smoked account for between 20,000 and 30,000 lung cancer diagnoses every year.
As more people quit smoking, the percentage of cancers diagnosed in people who used to smoke will continue to increase.

For certain people at high risk, screening for lung cancer using low-dose CT scans is proven to save lives. New guidelines will help you understand if CT screening is appropriate for you.

Get screened if you are 55 to 80, you are currently smoking or quit within the past 15 years, you have a smoking history of at least 30 packs.
1 pack/day X 30 years = 30 pack years
1.5 packs a day X 20 years = 30 pack years

Get screened, get tested, STOP SMOKING!
