☀🌞🌤 National Heat Awareness Day ☀🌞🌤

NATIONAL HEAT AWARENESS DAY

National Heat Awareness Day is observed each year on the last Friday in May.  Resulting in numerous fatalities each year, heat exhaustion and dehydration due to heat are some of the leading weather-related killers in the United States.

Facts About Heat-related Illness

What are some types of heat-related illness?
  • Heat cramps: These are short, severe cramps in the muscles of the leg, arm or abdomen that can happen during or after heavy exercise in extreme heat. Heavy sweating uses up the body’s supply of salts, which causes the cramps. Heat cramps also may be a symptom of heat exhaustion.
  • Heat exhaustion: Heat exhaustion occurs when a person spends time in a hot environment without drinking enough fluids. Symptoms include extreme thirst, fatigue, weakness, clammy skin, nausea or vomiting, and rapid breathing.
  • Heat stroke: The most serious heat-related illness, heat stroke occurs when body temperature rises too rapidly, to as much as 106°F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not provided. Symptoms of heat stroke include red, hot and dry skin, no sweating, and rapid, weak pulse.

How are heat-related illnesses treated?
For heat cramps:
  • Stop all activity and sit quietly in a cool place.
  • Drink water, a sports drink, or other drinks with no caffeine or alcohol.
  • Do not resume activity for a few hours after the cramps go away, since heat cramps can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
  • Get medical help if the cramps do not go away in one hour.
For heat exhaustion:
  • Drink water or other cool drinks with no alcohol or caffeine.
  • Rest.
  • Take a cool shower or bath.
  • Go to an air-conditioned environment.
  • Wear lightweight clothing.
For heat stroke:
Get the victim to a shady or cool area and call emergency medical assistance immediately. Until they arrive, do the following:
  • Cool the victim as quickly as possible with a cool bath or shower, a spray of cool water from a garden hose, or by wrapping the victim in a cool, wet sheet.
  • Check body temperature often and continue cooling efforts until temperature drops to 101-102°F.

Who is at risk for heat-related illnesses?
Anyone at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, but some people are at greater risk than others.
  • Infants and young children
  • Youth athletes
  • People over age 65
  • People with certain health conditions, such as mental illness, diabetes and hypertension
IMPORTANT: If you take prescription medication, ask your doctor if you need to take extra care in hot weather.
What is the “heat index?
The heat index tells you how it feels outside in the shade. It is not the same as the outside temperature. The heat index is a measurement of how hot it feels when relative humidity is combined with the effects of the air temperature. The National Weather Service will issue a Heat Advisory for a heat index greater than 105°F.

How can I prevent heat-related illnesses?
  • When the heat index is high, stay indoors as much as possible.
  • Move to the lower floors of your building when inside.
  • Schedule outdoor activities for cooler times of the day, before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
  • Wear light-colored, loose fitting clothing.
  • Drink plenty of water before starting any outdoor activity.
  • During outdoor activities, take frequent breaks and drink water or other fluids every 15 to 20 minutes, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Don’t leave infants, pets or children inside a parked car.
  • Dress infants and children in cool, loose fitting clothing and shade their faces with hats or an umbrella.
  • Fans will not prevent a heat-related illness. Take a cool shower or bath, or move to a room with air conditioning.
  • Check on adults you know that are at-risk for heat-related illness at least twice a day.
  • Constantly monitor children for signs of heat-related illnesses.

Hot Weather Tips
  • Apply sunscreen of SPF15 or higher at least 30 minutes prior to heading out. Continue to apply as the package directs. The most effective products are those that say “Broad Spectrum” or “UVA/UVB Protection” on their labels.
  • Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat to protect your eyes and face in the sun.
  • Avoid drinking certain types of beverages:
  • Reduce caffeine intake from beverages including coffee, tea, cola and other heavily caffeinated beverages.
  • Alcoholic beverages and drinks that are high in sugar.
  • Very cold drinks, as they can cause stomach cramps.
  • Avoid eating hot foods or heavy meals as they add heat to your body.

What can I do to prevent hyperthermia and heat stroke for my pets?
  • Prior to a heat emergency, make sure you have ample: pet food, bottled water, medications, veterinary records, cat litter/pan, can opener, food dishes, first aid kit and other supplies.
  • Never leave a pet alone in a car, even with the windows cracked.
  • Never leave a pet leashed at home unsupervised.
  • Limit your pet’s exercise to the morning or evening when temperature and heat index is not as high. Bring water while exercising pet.
  • Limit the distance and intensity of your pet’s exercise.
  • Ensure that fresh, cool water is available at all times for your pet.
  • Ensure that air conditioning is available for your pet if left indoors.

🕯️ 🕯 International AIDS Candlelight Memorial 🕯️ 🕯️

INTERNATIONAL AIDS CANDLELIGHT MEMORIAL TO BE MARKED AROUND THE WORLD

🕯️ On THE 18th OF May, thousands of people will take part in events around the world to support the thirty-first International AIDS Candlelight Memorial. Activities will range from small local vigils to national commemorations as people come together to light candles, march, perform, raise awareness and express solidarity with people living with and affected by HIV. People who have lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses will also be remembered.
🕯️ The memorial, with the theme of “Let’s keep the light on HIV”, is coordinated by the Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+) and is spearheaded by a coalition of more than a thousand community organizations, such as networks of HIV-positive people, women’s and youth groups, businesses, academic institutions, faith-based organizations and the media.
The occasion will be used to further the overarching aims of ensuring that HIV stays firmly on the social and political agenda and that HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services are available to all who need them. The Memorial also provides an opportunity to challenge stigma and encourage activism and community dialogue, while highlighting the need to safeguard the advances that have been made in stemming the epidemic and to make greater progress in the future.
🕯️ The Candlelight Memorial began in 1983 when HIV and how it is transmitted, was still being discovered. Knowing they would die within the year, four young men – Bobbi Campbell, Bobby Reynolds, Dan Turner and Mark Feldman – decided to put a “face on the disease” by coordinating a small vigil behind a banner reading “Fighting For Our Lives".
The four planned a march through the San Francisco gay district Castro to City Hall and created a poster. As others joined in, the Candlelight drew thousands, beginning a movement that would inspire countless other people living with HIV and AIDS in other countries to focus the attention of communities and national leaders on HIV, to foster support, and move people to action.
The Candlelight Memorial was managed by the PLHIV driven organization Mobilization Against AIDS until the Global Health Council began organizing the event in 2000. The Global Health Council organised the 25th Anniversary of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial in 2008 – commemorating a quarter century of remembrance, community mobilization, and global solidarity.
In 2011 the International Candlelight Memorial has returned to where it started, again hosted and coordinated by people living with HIV, through the Global Network of People living with HIV. In its vision, the Candlelight remains one of the most important civil society-led efforts, both to remember those we have lost, as well as to celebrate the lives of people living with HIV.
Since 1984 the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is hold on the third Sunday in May. In some countries, the exact date varies.

QUOTES

"WE HAVE SEEN EXTRAORDINARY ADVANCES IN HOW HIV IS RECOGNIZED AND TREATED. THIS CHANGE HAS ONLY BEEN ABLE TO COME ABOUT THROUGH THE INCREDIBLE ACTIVISM LEAD BY THE MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV. THE CANDLELIGHT MEMORIAL IS ABOUT RECOGNIZING PEOPLE WHO HAVE CAMPAIGNED FOR THE RIGHTS OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV, AS WELL AS REMEMBERING THOSE WHO HAVE FALLEN ALONG THE WAY."

🌹 α мoтнer'ѕ dαy ѕpecιαl мeѕѕαɢe ғroм ѕoмe eѕd ѕιѕтerѕ🌹

Another year some sisters of Eta Sigma Delta take time to give dedications or express their joys of motherhood. Take a look....

KariNoelle Baptiste

The best part of having a Mother in RL for me was learning what it meant to be a woman. My Mother taught me about life, family & unconditional love! I couldn't have asked for a better teacher!

The best part of being a Mother in RL & SL, for me, is the little things. To receive a call and hear my RL son call me Mom, or receive an IM inworld and my SL son & daughter first words is "Hey Mom!", just makes me smile! It's the excitement of watching my kids in both worlds grow up to be productive adults! It's the constant overwhelming feeling of protection I have for them, that even though all 3 of my kids are grown, I still worry and want to protect them.

But the best part of being a Mother, is making memories & stories that will be past on from one generation to the next.

Uqqn H. Kennedy Martian

I have two that I want to acknowledge for Mother's day. First one is my Sl mother Nia Kennedy.....She and i are very close....She's selfless....She loves her family beyond measure...I can always count on her,She gives me her honest opinions even when i don't want too hear them,lol.....I love my mom....We hit a rough patch but we were able to over come it and it has strengthen our bond even more so....I couldn't ask for a better mom!

My second one is my Glam ma Destiny Basset.....I love her so much and sometime I don't think she really knows just how much I do.....This woman has been in my sl life for many many years and although we haven't hung much in sl. I love and adore & respect her tremendously....I can go to her and talk to her about any and everything.....Like my mom I may not like everything she says (at that time) but she has never told me wrong....She makes me think about a lot of things.

Mom & Glam Ma I love you both so very much....You both are are very important part of my life!

SnowAngel Mindhaze

This Mothers Day is very special because of the lil bundle of joy that waits for me. Being a sl mom has been so amazing and fulfilling in second life for so many reasons. I take pride in being a sl mom to all my children. My children have always been the reason I work so hard and push myself to my own limits....

Kinda like my sl mom..."Momma Cher".  Years ago she started out as my pastor but today I'm proud to call her not only my best friend but my momma! Thank you, momma Cher for being a positive and influential mother figure to me in this game. I appreciate everything you not only do for me but for the family. You go out of your way to make sure your children have nothing but the best. You spoil me rotten and no matter what you are always there to guide me. I hope your Mothers day is blessed and filled with lots of love!!! I LOVE YOU TO PIECES!!!

Happy Mother's Day !!!!

Love your mini me AKA SnowAngel 😛

Love is True Love

A mother's love is a wonderful love packaged from heaven with special care.
A mother's love is like no other love in which you can compare.
A mother's love is purified by Angels and flows directly from her soul.
A mother's love is justified by God and by his hands he created the mold.
This mold that was shaped and fashioned by God has endured the test of time.
This mold that was taped and recorded by women rang out like a heavenly chime.
A mother's love is unconditional, and from her heart this can be told.
A mother's love is nutritional; it is the fruit that feeds our soul.
A mother's love 'IS' true love, and from her heart she cannot lie.
A mother's love is eternal, the kind that wont' ever die.
A mother's love is the tie that binds, and her bond can never be broken.
A mother's love is branded in our hearts, even when her words aren't spoken..
 R.I.P MOM........... I LOVE YOU! ♡ ♡ ♡

                            Dear God
Dear God,
Mother's day is coming but I cannot see her face, can you do me a quick favor at your own will and pace? Can you please pick some Roses in that perfect garden of yours? Give them to my lovely mother and tell her if comes from all her fours? Myself, my sisters and brother, for we miss her very much, but especially on this day we miss her tender touch.

Oh and God one more thing, if it's not too much trouble, pick another set of Roses just to make it a double? Oh and please tell her that we love her from the bottom and tops of our hearts. God thank you for this favor because it's very hard to be a part.

Love
    Us 💓💗💞

~♡ S.I.P Mommy for we will meet again I love you!

"This day is always bitter sweet because I miss my mother so much and envy those that still have their mothers to celebrate this day with. I am now a mother and I couldn't have been blessed with a better child than mine in real life. I celebrate this day for him and for my rl mother. I love her and I know we will meet again.

                             **************************************

In Second Life, I have the best children ever. No relationship is perfect but each day they teach me the real meaning of love and motherhood. I love them and my real life son to life. Nothing is more rewarding then being a mother.

~Destiny C. Basset

De'Azha De'Ville

Being raised by 2 grandmothers in RL has not been the easiest thing in the world but knowing I had 2 mothers couldn't have been better. My mothers taught me what it means to be loving, caring, gentle and kind.

My SL mothers has done just the same. Yes it may be women on another side of a computer but on that other side is compassionate women who show the same love as if this were RL.

From both worlds I have the best and it has taught me to be the best mother I can be to my son. God has blessed me with these special women and for that i give the biggest thanks.

Happy Mother's Day to all of the women in my life

🌝⏰ National Twilight Zone Day ⏰🌝

👁🌝
Twilight Zone Day is mysterious, weird, surreal and perhaps a little scary. We can think of many other adjectives, but I think you get the picture. Every once in a while, you have a day like this. And, today is designed to be that day.

The television show The Twilight Zone, was created, written and narrated by Rod Sterling.  It premiered on October 1, 1959. The episodes were wildly popular, stretched the imagination, and captivated viewers. The show aired from 1959-1964.

HOW TO OBSERVE

What’s your favorite episode of The Twilight Zone? Use #NationalTwilightZoneDay to post on social media.

"You are about to enter another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind.
A journey into a wondrous land of imagination. Next Stop, the TWILIGHT ZONE!"

Beloved by children, teenagers and adults alike, the cult classic TV show The Twilight Zone has affected entire generations of people, prompting them to take a closer look at life and various phenomena and take nothing for granted, thanks to it's unique combination of science fiction, mystery, and thriller/horror themes. Not to mention how many of today's well-known actors got their start in it-Burt Reynolds, Leonard Nimoy, and William Shatner, to name but a few. How then could this majorly influential show not have it's own holiday?

THE HISTORY OF TWILIGHT ZONE DAY:

The Twilight Zone was created by acclaimed television producer Rod Sterling in 1959, with the first episode premiering on October 2nd. At the time of it's release, it was vastly different from anything else on TV, and it struggled a bit to carve out a niche for itself at the very beginning. In fact, Sterling himself, though respected and adored by many, was famous for being one of Hollywood's most controversial characters and was often called the "angry young man" of Hollywood for his numerous clashes with television executives and sponsors over issues such as censorship, racism, and war. However, his show soon gained a large, devoted audience.

Twilight Zone Day is an annual holiday created to celebrate this thought-provoking television series, where everything was strange and surreal and nothing was ever quite as it seemed to be.

There are a number of ways to celebrate Twilight Zone Day, and the one you choose my be connected to how well you know this TV series. Believe it or not, there are still people out there who have never seen it! You could watch some episodes from the classic series, perhaps " To Serve Man" "It's a Good Life", or "The Eye of the Beholder" episodes that are widely considered some of the very best in the entire series. You could also watch the 1983 Twilight Zone Movie. There are Twilight Zone board games and trivia games. With friends, you can discuss who you think were the strangest villains, and what were the true reasons were for them being the way that they were. And what a good party be without some tasty drinks? Yes, there are Twilight Zone cocktails. You can try them by mixing Bacardi white, Dark and 151 Proof Rum, Triple Sec, pineapple and orange juices. If you have a few Twilight Zone Cocktails, you may well find yourself transported to a different dimension.

🙏 ᑎᗩTIOᑎᗩᒪ ᗪᗩY Oᖴ ᑭᖇᗩYEᖇ 🙏

Today is, May 4, 2017, National Day of Prayer!  The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. Many people are unaware that they live in a nation that has a law in place requiring our President proclaim a National Day of Prayer each year on the first Thursday in May. It is Public Law 105-225 that the President shall issue each year a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a National Day of Prayer on which the people of the United States may turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals.

For me, as a citizen and resident of the United States and as a believer in Christ Jesus,I not only have a spiritual responsibility according to 1 Timothy 2:1-2 to pray, but a civic duty as well to heed our President’s call to stand in the gap for our nation. Who but God’s people have the ability to enter into the very throne room of Heaven with prayers and petitions!

The theme for this year as per national day of prayer website is For Your Great Name’s Sake! Hear Us... Forgive Us...Heal Us! Taken from Daniel 9:19, which says, “O Lord, Listen! O Lord, Forgive! O Lord, Hear and Act! For Your Sake, O My God...”. As the 2017 National Day of Prayer on May 4th approaches, thousands of individuals, churches, and communities will be working to rally millions of people to once again heed this call!

At this crucial time for our nation, we can do nothing more important than pray. The National Day of Prayer has great significance for us as a nation as it enables us to recall and to teach the way in which our founding fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced with critical decisions. It stands as a call for us to humbly come before God, seeking his guidance for our leaders and his grace upon us as a people. The unanimous passage of the bill establishing the National Day of Prayer as an annual event, signifies that prayer is as important to our nation today as it was in the beginning.

Like Thanksgiving or Christmas, this day has become a national observance placed on all Hallmark calendars and observed annually across the nation and in Washington, D.C. Every year, local, state, and federal observances were held from sunrise in Maine to sunset in Hawaii, uniting Americans from all socio-economic, political and ethnic backgrounds in prayer for our nation. It is estimated that over two million people attended more than 30,000 observances – organized by approximately 40,000 volunteers. At state capitols, county court houses, on the steps of city halls, and in schools, businesses, churches and homes, people stopped their activities and gathered for prayer.(http://www.nationaldayofprayer.org/about)

  • 1775 – The first Continental Congress called for a National Day of Prayer
  • 1863 – Abraham Lincoln called for such a day.
  • 1952 – Congress established NDP as an annual event by a joint resolution, signed into law by President Truman (82-324)
  • 1988 – The law was amended and signed by President Reagan, designating the NDP as the first Thursday in May (100-307).
